Scooter Pros and Cons

Thinking about switching from a car to a scooter? Before you make the big decision to do so check out our pros and cons about scooters. What? You mean scooters have cons? Yes, like anything, scooters have both pros and cons. If you can afford to it's nice to have both a car and a scooter but with the economy the way it is that isn't an option for a lot of people. So sure a scooter costs less and uses less gas but should you give in and sell your car to rely on your scooter as your only mode of transportation?

Pros

  • Save time, gas and money!
  • Go green! Scooters are more environmentally friendly than cars.
  • Scooters can get up to 100mpg, although the estimated average is 85 (hey still way better than your car!).
  • Flexibility in transportation.
  • Easier to park (and in some places, like Denver, free parking!)
  • Scooters save an estimated $1 per mile compared to miles driven in your car in depreciation and fuel consumption.

Cons

  • It takes longer to get places via scoot.
  • Most scooters can't travel on the highway.
  • Helmet hair.
  • Weather. Rain or snow + scooters? Not always so much fun.
  • Fender bender? Scooter accidents aren't always as forgiving as car accidents, so regardless of your state's helmet law you should always wear one!

Driving and Buying Tips

If you've decided to make the transition from car to scooter or your lucky enough to have both read on to find out some of our driving and buying tips for scooters!

  • Although it only costs anywhere from $5 to $15 to register a scooter (usually for 3 years) it does cost extra to get insurance and it's a good idea seeing as a scooter is a little bit easier to steal than an SUV. Insurance will probably cost you only $100 for an entire year, so much less than a car. Plus if you use the same insurance company as your auto insurance they may cut you a break. This coverage will help you in case your scooter is stolen or in case of an injury or crash while scooting.
  • Always, always, always where a helmet! Sure you may only be cruising at a top speed of 35 mph, but accidents can still happen. Please don't make us say we told you so. (Do this regardless of what your state's helmet law is, please!).
  • Icy or wet roads provide dangerous driving conditions for scooters. So if you plan to scoot in the winter or rain consider different tire options for doing so.
  • When buying a scooter do your research! That's why we are providing scooter reviews so you have something to base your decision off of. Everyone has different preferences and that is no different when buying a scooter. Price is always an issue, but remember if you pay more up front for a better scooter than means less money in the end. Because if you buy a cheap unknown brand who knows how much money it is going to take to fix it after you break down on the side of the road?
